Silent Knife: Cesarean Prevention and Vaginal Birth after Cesarean
Author:
Nancy Wainer Cohen & Lois J. Estner
CBI Review:
The prequel to Open Season, Silent Knife, has an important
message. The author's anger towards the medical fraternity
and the increasing cesarean rate are unfortunate as they affect the
power of the message. Overall though, a useful addition to
your library, especially if you want to gain insight into the issues
surrounding cesareans and VBACs.

Immaculate Deception II: Myth, Magic & Birth
Author:
Suzanne Arms
CBI Review:
Although this is not a book specifically about cesarean and VBAC,
it explores the high levels of technology used in modern hospitals
and the consequences from the use of that technology. Suzanne gives
a clear background as to how we have reached the point we are at
today and dispels some of the myths about the benefits of high tech
birth. Those with strong Christian views may feel uncomfortable in
Suzanne's analysis of the impact of religion on birth practices.

Open Season: A Survival Guide for Natural Childbirth and VBAC in the
90s
Author:
Nancy Wainer Cohen
CBI Review:
Nancy has some excellent information in this book. It is less
angry than Silent Knife, however, it adds little new information.
The negative aspects of this book are the
lack of references and evidence based information, and emotive
language.

Birth After Cesarean: The Medical Facts
Author:
Bruce L. Flamm
Amazon Description:
After years of deliberation, the American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists has recently recommended that
routine repeat Cesarean sections should no longer be performed, with
only a few exceptions. In this handbook, Flamm successfully
describes and defends this newly popular concept of vaginal birth
after Cesarean (VBAC). He discusses the subject in depth, using a
question-and-answer format which, along with a very complete table
of contents, makes this book an easily accessible text for library
patrons. |

Cesarean Voices
Editor:
Krista Cornish Scott, Laureen Hudson, Jill MacCorkle & Pamela Udy
Amazon Description:
No description available. The description on the ICAN
website (publisher) states: "Cesarean mothers tell their
stories and feelings of loss, pain, anger, sadness and more in their
very own words. A very emotional read, this compilation shows that a
cesarean section surgery is not just another way to have a baby, and
that how the mother feels about her experience does matter." |

The Cesarean Myth
Author:
Mortimer Rosen & Lillian Thomas
Amazon Description:
Rosen, chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology
at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, and freelance writer Thomas
use numerous examples from Rosen's three decades of practice to
illustrate when a cesarean is mandatory, when it is unnecessary or
unwise, and when the decision is a judgment call. This book, they
say, is intended as an effort to reduce confrontations by arming
patients with data and by encouraging them and their obstetricians
to form alliances of trust long before determinations about cesarean
delivery must be made. |
